Introducing IVMP

IVMP stands for Integrated Vegetation Management Project and is a 3-year research project to identify the most appropriate practices for the vegetation management issues facing modern asset managers in Australia. The focus is mown vegetation.

Vegetation management issues
Current vegetation management practices, while responsive to needs, are costly and unsustainable. Some of the key issues include:

  • Mowing is costly, dangerous, time consuming, needs to be repeated frequently, and often leads to weed dispersal problems.
  • Public and operator safety is of primary concern.
  • Resources and budgets are limited with continually rising costs, eg fuel, labour and equipment.
  • Heightened public expectations regarding presentation of public open spaces adds further pressures to management issues.
  • Environmental impact needs to be minimised.

IVMP is a collaborative research project.

  • How is integrated vegetation management more environmentally friendly than current practices?

By Blogger Barbara, At September 10, 2008 at 5:20 PM

  • There are many benefits that can be realised through implementing integrated vegetation management practices. The key environmental benefits would include reduced carbon emissions, reduced waste, reduced biomass, reduced spread of weeds and improved erosion control.

The overriding focus of the IVMP research is the sustainable management of all classifications of mown vegetation and the improvement of undesirable species composition to that of desirable, more manageable species composition. This focus on better managing the undesirable species populations present in all mown vegetation environments is also a significant environment benefit, as current management practices such as mowing often aid the spread of undesirable species.

  • Can you tell me more about IVMP?

By Blogger Barbara, At September 11, 2008 at 2:37 AM

  • IVMP is a decision-making and quality management process for maintaining mown vegetation that integrates the following: needs of local communities and asset users; knowledge of plant ecology (and natural processes); design, construction, and maintenance considerations; government statutes and regulations; technology and with cultural, biological, mechanical, and chemical pest control methods to economically manage vegetation for safety, plus environmental and visual quality.
